  5.     You  may have wondered what are those files, starting with a
  6.     '.'  in your home directory. This hopefully explains the use
  7.     of them.
  8.  
  9. NAME    .login and .logout
  10.  
  11. DESCRIPTION
  12.     These files are executed every time you login or logout. Its
  13.     main use is to allow configurable login-sequence, where users
  14.     can display files and run any commands they wish. All aliases
  15.     and variables are also set in .login.
  16. EXAMPLE
  17.     .login may contain:
  18.         who        shows who's in
  19.

  21. NAME    .signature
  22.  
  23. DESCRIPTION
  24.     .signature  resides in your home directory and it is used by
  25.     mail and rn-programs when you send mail or post articles.
  26.     It is automagically appended to your letters and articles,so
  27.     you might like to edit it..

  30. NAME    .plan and .project
  31.  
  32. DESCRIPTION
  33.     These  files  are  used when a user wants to get information
  34.     about you.There is a command 'finger',which takes a username
  35.     as  an  argument and then shows information about that user.
  36.     You  might  try for example 'finger root'. Plan and project-
  37.     files are good places for your contact address, phone etc.

  40. NAME    .lastlogin
  41.  
  42. DESCRIPTION
  43.     Every time you login in the system the shell stores the time
  44.     and  date  to  .lastlogin .  There is no other use of it but
  45.     security.  You  can monitor if someone has used you account.

  48. NAME    .letter and .article
  49.  
  50. DESCRIPTION
  51.     These  files  contain  the last mail letter and news article
  52.     you have edited.

  55. NAME    .mailrc and .newsrc
  56.  
  57. DESCRIPTION
  58.     With  the  help  of  these  files  mail and rn remember what
  59.     letters and articles you have read recently,you really don't
  60.     want to reread them.

  63. NAME    .ircrc

  65. DESCRIPTION
  66.     This file contains some definitions for the irc program. You
  67.     can change display colors and you initial Nick-name.

  69. NAME    .mbox
  70.  
  71. DESCRIPTION
  72.     When you exit mail with q,it appends all messages you didn't
  73.     delete  to  the  .mbox. If you exit with x, messages will be
  74.     held in the system mailbox file.
